Quilt Sashing Calculator: Size and Cut List
Add internal sashing between blocks and between rows to calculate the finished top. The common mistake is to enter an unfinished block size: enter the size after its outer seams are sewn.

- Finished top
- 42 × 53 in
- Short strips
- 15 at 2.5 × 9.5 in
- Long strips
- 4 at 2.5 × 42.5 in
How the calculation works
Finished width = blocks across × block size + gaps across × sashing width. Use the same rule for height. Short strips join blocks within each row. Long strips join the completed rows. A quarter-inch seam on each edge adds half an inch to every cut dimension.
Worked example
Four blocks across and five rows of 9-inch finished blocks with 2-inch sashing make a 42 × 53 inch top. Cut 15 short strips at 2.5 × 9.5 inches and 4 long strips at 2.5 × 42.5 inches.
Check before you start
This layout has no cornerstones, outer sashing or border. Long strips may exceed your usable fabric width; allow extra length for any joins. Check each sewn row before cutting long strips. Do not substitute this list for a pattern with cornerstones.
These calculations use the dimensions you enter and the stated layout rules. They do not estimate fabric shrinkage or yarn usage.
